The Central Pacific region of Costa Rica is widely known for its incredible fishing. Jaco sits directly in the middle of this productive zone, with access to rich offshore currents, underwater seamounts, and large schools of baitfish that attract some of the ocean’s most powerful predators.
OUR SERVICES
Offshore fishing
Offshore fishing is the highlight of many trips to Jaco. Just a short run from the coast, anglers can find themselves fishing in deep blue water where billfish, tuna, and other pelagic species patrol the currents.
Offshore fishing trips typically run between 20 and 40 miles from the coast depending on conditions and where fish are being found. Captains troll with large artificial lures and natural baits while searching for bird activity, floating debris, and temperature breaks that attract fish.

Sailfish
The Central Pacific of Costa Rica is famous for its sailfish fishing. These fast and acrobatic fish are often found in large numbers offshore, especially during the dry season months. Sailfish provide thrilling action and are typically released to help conserve the population.

Marlin
Blue marlin and striped marlin are powerful predators that attract serious anglers from around the world. Hooking a marlin is a true test of strength and endurance. These fish can grow to impressive sizes and provide one of the most exciting battles in sportfishing.

Yellowfin Tuna
Yellowfin tuna travel in large schools and are known for their incredible power. Anglers often encounter tuna while trolling offshore or while fishing around pods of dolphins. These fish are also excellent table fare and are often enjoyed as fresh sushi after the trip.

Mahi Mahi
Mahi mahi, also known as dorado or dolphin fish, are colorful and aggressive predators. They are commonly found near floating debris, weed lines, and offshore currents. Mahi mahi are both exciting to catch and delicious to eat.
Inshore Fishing in Jaco Costa Rica
Inshore fishing near Jaco offers steady action and the chance to catch powerful coastal species. Many anglers choose inshore trips because they stay closer to shore and often provide fast paced fishing throughout the day.
Inshore fishing grounds include rocky points, reefs, river mouths, and islands where baitfish gather. These areas attract a variety of species that thrive in the rich coastal ecosystem.
Roosterfish
Roosterfish are one of the most sought after inshore species in Costa Rica. Recognizable by their distinctive dorsal fins, roosterfish are strong fighters that provide exciting battles on light tackle. They are usually caught along beaches and rocky coastal areas.
Snapper
Snapper species such as cubera snapper and red snapper are common targets for anglers fishing near reefs and rocky structure. These fish are known for their powerful strikes and excellent flavor.
Jack Crevalle
Jack crevalle are aggressive predators that often travel in schools. When anglers find a school of jacks the action can be nonstop as these fish attack lures and live bait with incredible force.
Best Time of Year for Fishing in Jaco
Fishing in Jaco is productive throughout the year, with different species becoming more active during different seasons.
January through April is often considered prime season for sailfish and marlin, with calm ocean conditions and excellent offshore fishing.
May through August can bring excellent marlin and tuna fishing, with occasional large mahi mahi appearing offshore.
September through November is often known for strong tuna fishing and great opportunities for mahi mahi around floating debris and offshore structure.
Roosterfish and other inshore species can be caught year round, making inshore fishing a great option during any month.
Because fishing conditions change throughout the year, experienced local captains are essential for finding the most productive areas on any given day.
